Historic Design Standards
Wake County Historic Landmarks
Wake County, North Carolina
in progress
Wake County boasts numerous historic landmarks that illustrate its history. From stately homes constructed in the early 1800s on rural acres to a geodesic dome near a small town commercial corridor, the historic landmarks in Wake County are notably diverse. The previous standards used by the Wake County Historic Preservation Commission (WCHPC) dated to the early 2000s, and the County understood that updated standards were needed. After extensive discussions with Capital Area Preservation, the non-profit organziation serving as staff to the WCHPC, and the WCHPC, Cassandra and Katie crafted design standards that address the contemporary needs of the Commission.
Important components of the updated standards include guidance on the use of alternative materials, evaluating changes to landmarks that have occurred over time, and considering the adaptive use of historic landmarks. Following ongoing consultation with the WCHPC, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), and the public, the updated standards will contain extensive photography, diagrams, and will be easy to understand and navigate.
