Historic District Design Guidelines

Battle Creek’s Historic Districts

Battle Creek, Michigan

in progress

Battle Creek, which was established in the 1831, has a long and storied history that is illustrated by the historic buildings that line its streets. Seeking to continue protecting its historic buildings and spaces, the City hired Cassandra and Katie to develop historic district design guidelines. The guidelines will aid the Historic District Commission (HDC) and property owners as they consider work to historic resources within the city’s five historic districts which contain historic residential and commercial buildings.

After conducting a well-attended public engagement meeting and talking with commissioners, the guidelines will include introductory sections on historic preservation in Battle Creek, design guidelines for specific materials and features, and an economic feasibility assessment, among other sections. Cassandra and Katie are working with a steering committee, the entire HDC, city staff, and the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to craft the new guidelines. The guidelines text will be set within an illustrative document containing extensive photography and applicable diagrams.
